Message From The Chair

‌The University of Miami Chemistry Department presently has 13 tenured and tenure-track faculty members and four lecturers. Modern research laboratory and office space for the department was completed in 1995, increasing the total space available to the Chemistry department by more than 30%. Partial renovations of laboratory and office space in the older Cox Science Building are underway to guarantee state-of-the-art facilities. The department has a substantial level of research activity with research funding from various federal agencies. Total publications from the faculty since 2012 have exceeded 400. The faculty members of the department are not only excellent researchers and respected teachers but also are leaders in the scientific community. They serve on various national review panels, editorial boards of journals, and organizing committees of scientific conferences.

The department’s graduate program offers both the Ph.D. and the M.S. degrees. A total of 49 graduate students are currently active in our department. The graduate program although small is diverse and meritorious. We believe that ‘smallness’ is the strength of the department, allowing for closer interaction between faculty and students. The department has an outstanding record at nurturing and graduating minorities as reflected by the fact that, during the last ten years, more than half of our Ph.D. graduates were members of underrepresented group, most notably Hispanic and women.

The department is located in the picturesque Coral Gables campus of the University. Hundreds of oak and mahogany trees, coconut palms, and numerous other species provide greenery and shade for a network of fountains and walkways that criss-cross the grounds.
