Message from the Chair

Welcome to the Department of Chemistry at the University of Miami! Our department is located in multiple buildings in the heart of the beautiful Coral Gables campus. Currently, we have 18 tenured and tenure-track faculty members and four lecturer track faculty members. At nearly 50 graduate students and multiple postdoctoral scholars, our research staffing is vibrant, completing cutting edge research in all areas of the scientific discipline. In addition, a cadre of undergraduate and high school students work in our research groups, providing educational experiences at all levels. Our research is well-funded through multiple federal (e.g. NSF, NIH, DoD, etc.) and state agencies, as well as private foundations, setting a solid foundation for our research, which is supported by state of the art instrumentation in multiple University facilities.

Our vibrant graduate program contains multiple degrees, including the Ph.D. and M.S. degrees. We also offer a unique 4+1 combined B.S./M.S. program for incoming undergraduate students, providing new pathways to scientific careers and professional education. Our graduate program is highly diverse and offers a warm and nurturing environment for students as they progress on their pathways towards their degrees. The department has an outstanding record at nurturing and graduating researchers from diverse groups as reflected by the fact that, during the last ten years, more than half of our Ph.D. graduates were members of underrepresented groups. Our students routinely win highly competitive awards, including NSF Graduate Research Fellowships among others. Upon completion of their degrees, our graduates have begun highly successful careers in industry, academia, and government agencies.

Undergraduate studies in our department provides multiple majors in Chemistry (B.S., ACS certified B.S., and B.A), as well as a new B.S. major in Materials Science. We regularly graduate upwards of 30 undergraduate majors per year that go on to highly rewarding next steps, including careers in research, graduate studies, and professional schools (e.g.medical, dental, veterinary schools, etc.). Similar to our graduate program, our undergraduate major population is highly diverse where we take great pride in paying attention to the individual needs of our students in a comprehensive, wholistic, and inclusive environment.

I welcome you to continue to peruse our website and urge you to consider the Department of Chemistry at the University of Miami for your future studies. Feel free to reach out to me via email (knecht@miami.edu) with any questions that you may have.
